A Turkish Airlines (THY) Airbus A330-300, registration TC-JNI, operating flight TK-711 from Islamabad to Istanbul, experienced a serious incident during landing at Istanbul Airport. While on final approach to runway 35R, the aircraft’s right wing struck the runway.
Following the incident, the pilots promptly executed a go-around, climbing to 4,000 feet. The aircraft was redirected to runway 34L and landed without further issues approximately 17 minutes later.
Incident Details and Official Statements
An official statement confirmed that the aircraft’s right wing made contact with the runway surface, causing minor damage. The incident has been classified as serious, prompting a detailed investigation.
ADS-B data revealed that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline during final approach. However, near the second fixed-distance marker, the aircraft unexpectedly veered right, leading to the go-around. During the climb-out, the aircraft moved approximately 45 meters (150 feet) to the right of the runway’s edge.
According to data provided by Aviation Herald, the aircraft exhibited a rightward bank of 15 degrees at the moment the wingtip made contact with the runway surface.
Aircraft Under Maintenance
As of January 12, 2025, the Airbus A330-300 remains grounded at Istanbul Airport for maintenance and further inspections.
