Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that a new-generation domestic air security system will be put into operation within the scope of the Savuran Project, which will strengthen Turkey’s civil aviation security. The system will offer a fully autonomous, AI-supported protection architecture against bird flocks, FPV drones and unauthorized unmanned aerial vehicles.
Domestic Solution to Bird and Drone Threats at Airports
With the project carried out by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, it is aimed to raise security standards to the highest level at civil airports and critical facilities. The project is based on a completely domestic and national security infrastructure that combines detection, identification, tracking and intervention stages on a single platform.
24/7 Air Security with Two Separate Drone Systems
The air security system to be developed within the scope of the Savuran Project will operate in integration with two different drone models:
- Bird Flock Guidance and Dispersal Drone
- Will reduce bird-related risks on runways and approach–departure corridors
- Will disperse bird flocks without harming them using high-frequency and ultrasonic acoustic systems
- Will operate with completely non-lethal methods
- Interception Drone Against FPV Drones
- Will have high manoeuvrability and speed capabilities
- Will be able to perform autonomous missions
- Will feature special safety mechanisms such as safe return or self-destruction
- Will be able to perform active and instant intervention against unauthorized drones
- Both systems are being designed to operate uninterruptedly 24/7.
Threat Classification with Artificial Intelligence
The most innovative aspect of the Savuran Project is its AI-supported sensor fusion infrastructure. Signals received from radar, thermal cameras, optical sensors and RF transmitters will be collected under a single structure and analysed in real time.
Thanks to AI algorithms, the system will:
- Instantly identify FPV drones
- Classify the level of threat
- Trigger automatic alarms in critical situations
- Perform human-approved or fully autonomous intervention
Objective: High-Level Protection for Turkey’s Critical Facilities
The Savuran Project will not be limited to airports alone. It will also be used at power plants, military bases, strategic public facilities and critical infrastructure points.
The project is considered a strategic move that transfers Turkey’s domestic production capabilities in defence technologies to the civilian domain.
