Turkey has once again demonstrated the strength of its domestic defense industry by signing a series of strategic contracts worth $6.5 billion to expand the Iron Dome integrated air defense system. This significant step was announced in a ceremony hosted by Havelsan, with the participation of the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) and senior industry figures.
Major Investment in Domestic Air Defense Systems
The Presidency of Defense Industries announced that the agreements under the Iron Dome project have a total economic value of approximately $6.5 billion. Through these agreements, Turkey aims not only to develop air defense systems with local resources but also to achieve the capacity to export them to international markets. Haluk Görgün, President of the SSB, highlighted that Turkey is not only meeting its own air defense needs with domestic resources but is also exporting systems at various levels. He emphasized the importance of the domestic and layered air defense doctrine and stated that the country now has the capacity to produce both software and hardware for integrated systems operating over a unified network.
Strategic Importance of Domestic Air Defense Systems
Görgün noted that the progress made over the past 23 years has been achieved with the support of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and that this progress has contributed to the establishment of a self-sufficient, sustainable defense ecosystem in Turkey. He added that Turkey is also continuing to enhance its deterrence by mass-producing long-range strike capabilities.

Ahmet Akyol, General Manager of Aselsan, emphasized the importance of mass-producing new air defense systems that will contribute to Turkey’s strategic security. Akyol stated, “The new contracts are of strategic importance for Turkey and will enable the mass production of significant quantities of air defense systems.”
Murat İkinci, General Manager of Roketsan, pointed out that these new projects are not limited to air defense systems but also cover a wide range of areas, from space systems to anti-tank platforms. İkinci stated, “With the agreements signed today, we have taken significant steps to enhance the strategic power of our Armed Forces.”

Hüseyin Avşar, Deputy Minister of Defense Industry, highlighted the contribution of these projects to Turkey’s national security and deterrence.
