US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that Denmark and the Netherlands will transfer F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, with the aircraft expected to arrive in Ukraine during the summer months. Speaking at the “NATO Public Forum” event during the NATO Summit in Washington, Blinken emphasized the ongoing support for Ukraine to effectively respond to Russian aggression, stating that a robust package is being developed for this purpose.
NATO Summit and Joint Statement
Following Blinken’s remarks, US President Joe Biden, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen issued a joint written statement regarding the F-16 transfers. The statement highlighted that the Danish and Dutch governments, with US support, are in the process of donating American-made F-16s to Ukraine. It was noted that the transfer process has begun and the F-16 fighter jets will be operational this summer.
While the statement did not provide details due to security concerns, it underscored the commitment to enhancing Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. It was announced that a fleet of fourth-generation modern F-16 fighter jets will be transferred to Ukraine, along with the provision of training support.
Support from Norway: Six F-16s to be Donated
Norway has also joined the countries supporting Ukraine. The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with an announcement from Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, stated that six F-16 fighter jets will be donated to Ukraine. Store emphasized the critical importance of Ukraine being able to defend itself against air attacks in its fight against Russia.
Zelensky: “We Need 128 Aircraft”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed that the number of F-16s to be provided to Ukraine is expected to exceed 60, but stated that this number is insufficient. Speaking on the matter on Tuesday, Zelensky said, “Even if it’s 50, it’s nothing. They have 300 aircraft. We need 128 planes to defend ourselves.”
An important issue for Kyiv is the training of Ukrainian pilots. Although the Zelensky administration has complained about the pace of pilot training in the US, Washington has stated that their capacity to provide training is limited.
Strengthening Ukraine’s Air Defense
With support from the US, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway, Ukraine aims to significantly enhance its air defense capacity. The F-16 fighter jets and training support provided by these countries will greatly boost Ukraine’s defense capabilities against Russia and offer more effective protection against air attacks.
