Tourism Exchange Japan has launched the Japan Travel Trade Portal, a business-to-business sales platform built to connect international travel sellers directly with Japanese accommodations and experiences that have historically been hard to book from outside the country.
Japan’s regional destinations away from Tokyo and Kyoto have long drawn interest from clients seeking a quieter, more local stay, but language barriers, limited distribution and operational gaps have kept many of those properties out of reach for international sellers. The new portal is designed to close that gap and open direct access to areas that previously required in-country contacts or manual arrangements.
The platform links to four major Connected Booking Systems in Japan, giving users access to more than 20,000 accommodations. The initial rollout focuses on ryokans in major onsen towns and popular sightseeing areas, along with properties in the Kii Peninsula and Niigata Prefecture, two regions known for local culture and traditions that have not had an easy path to global sale until now.
The system offers a 13 percent commission structure on net pricing, along with live inventory access that provides real-time availability and instant booking confirmation. Its interface runs in English, French, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese and Japanese, and automatic translation extends reach to Japanese-only properties that would otherwise be off-limits to non-Japanese speakers. Suppliers invoice travel companies directly through the platform, and the system also supports special dietary needs, including vegan and vegetarian requests, along with accessibility requirements. Booking, cancellation and billing are handled in a single system rather than across separate channels.
Tourism Exchange Japan plans to expand the portal further, adding activities and experience programs along with new regions including Hokuriku, the Mt. Fuji area, Nagano, Setouchi, Kyushu and Okinawa. Each of these areas carries its own distinct character, and the added inventory is expected to widen the pool of bookable regional properties over time.
No comparable platform currently exists for this purpose, and its arrival changes how regions such as the Kii Peninsula and Niigata Prefecture connect to buyers outside Japan.
