The Official Aviation Guide (OAG), one of the leading platforms for global travel and aviation data, has published its 2025 World’s Busiest Airports ranking. Prepared on the basis of scheduled flight seat capacity, the report reveals that global aviation has entered a new phase of growth in the post-pandemic period.
Atlanta Maintains Its Leadership
Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) in the United States retained its title as the world’s busiest airport in 2025, with a seat capacity of 63.1 million. ATL’s capacity increased by 1% year-on-year, largely returning to pre-pandemic 2019 levels.
Dubai the Closest Challenger to the Top
Dubai International Airport (DXB) held on to second place in the global ranking with a seat capacity of 62.4 million, significantly narrowing the gap with Atlanta. DXB’s capacity increased by 4% compared to 2024 and by 16% compared to 2019, further strengthening its position as the world’s busiest international airport.
Asia and North America Dominate
According to OAG data, of the world’s top 10 busiest airports, four are in North America, three in Asia, two in Europe, and one in the Middle East.
Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) ranked third with a seat capacity of 55.4 million, slightly surpassing pre-pandemic levels.
Istanbul Shows Strong Growth in the Global Top 10
Istanbul Airport (IST) reached a seat capacity of 51.5 million in 2025, maintaining its fifth place in the global ranking. With a 6% year-on-year increase and 22% growth compared to 2019, the airport ranked among the world’s fastest-growing major airports.
Within the global top 10, the strongest year-on-year growth was recorded by Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and Istanbul Airport (IST). ORD increased its capacity by 8%, while Istanbul recorded a 6% rise.
Istanbul and Dubai Stand Out in International Traffic
In terms of international seat capacity, Dubai International Airport remained the world’s busiest international airport with 62.4 million seats, surpassing London Heathrow by 13.5 million seats.
Istanbul Airport, with 41.2 million international seats, recorded 7% growth compared to 2024 and 27% growth compared to 2019, becoming the airport with the strongest long-term increase.
Heathrow Leads Europe, Rapid Growth at Istanbul and Sabiha Gökçen
London Heathrow Airport (LHR) maintained its status as Europe’s busiest airport with a seat capacity of 52.1 million.
Istanbul Airport ranked second across Europe, while Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) reached 28.6 million seats with 15% year-on-year growth, standing out among Europe’s fastest-growing airports.
A New Era in Global Aviation
In its assessment, OAG emphasised that the 2025 rankings clearly reflect the resilience of major domestic markets such as the United States and China, strong growth in the Middle East, and the rise of new global hub airports like Istanbul.
OAG officials included the following statement in the report:
“The 2025 rankings show that global aviation has entered a new phase of growth. Dubai’s continued expansion and Istanbul’s rise as a global hub clearly demonstrate how airline networks are evolving.”
