Turning Point in Aviation History: The World’s First Mass-Produced Pressurised Aircraft B-29

Developed by the United States, the B-29 Superfortress went down in history as the “most expensive aircraft,” costing the equivalent of 55.6 billion dollars today. This giant bomber, which changed the course of the war, not only carried atomic bombs but also paved the way for modern aviation.

In 1940, before officially entering the Second World War, the United States moved to meet the need for a “super bomber” in the face of the growing threat of war. The aircraft was required to have a range of 3,200 kilometres and to fly at the high altitudes that were unreachable at the time.

The XB-29 prototype, developed by Boeing, answered this need. After four years of work, the B-29 Superfortress was produced, becoming not only a turning point in the war but also in aviation history.

More Expensive than the Manhattan Project

The B-29 was recorded as the most costly military project of its time. At a cost equivalent to 55.6 billion dollars today, the project turned out to be nearly 50% more expensive than the Manhattan Project, which produced the atomic bomb.

The World’s First Mass-Produced Pressurised Aircraft

A special cabin pressurisation system was developed to allow it to operate at altitudes of 30,000 feet. This enabled the crew to carry out missions without the need for oxygen masks or heavy flight suits. The B-29 thus went down in history as the world’s first mass-produced pressurised aircraft.

Considered the forerunner of many modern aviation technologies, the B-29 not only served during the war years but also inspired the development of strategic bombers in the years that followed.
