The Future of Aviation in Turkey: From KAAN to Gökbey…

The signing ceremony held in Ankara became a critical event where projects shedding light on Turkey’s future in aviation came together. At this event, dedicated to ‘Manned Air Platforms’, a series of decisions and order contracts were signed for significant projects like KAAN, Hürjet, Hürkuş-B, and Gökbey.

The decisions made and signatures put forth at the ceremony provided significant clues on how Turkey’s aviation sector would shape in the next decade. Especially for the KAAN project, which is becoming a rising star in Turkey’s national defense industry, a critical process has commenced.

According to Defense Industry Researcher Kubilay Yıldırım, the importance of the Hürjet and Hürkuş projects is significant in the renewal of the Turkish Air Force’s aging training aircraft fleet. It is believed that Hürjet and Hürkuş will contribute to the Turkish Air Force having a stronger and younger fleet.

Yıldırım also evaluated the developments in the Hürkuş project, mentioning that some performance deficiencies were identified in the first 15 aircraft produced, leading to the formulation of a new roadmap. Within this scope, a procurement plan for 40 units of the new aircraft, named Hürkuş-B, is being made.

Additionally, significant steps were taken for the Gökbey helicopter at the signing ceremony. While it was noted that various versions of Gökbey would be produced to meet the needs of different users, it was emphasized that this project presents a great opportunity for the Turkish aviation sector.

However, a critical process has begun for one of the most eye-catching projects, KAAN. It is indicated that the second-phase design process is proceeding diligently. During this process, detailed design, aerodynamic design, and critical review meetings for the KAAN project will take place.”
