If you have clients looking to travel to Tanzania in the future, keep reading. Starting Oct. 1, 2026, foreign visitors entering Mainland Tanzania must hold valid Inbound Travel Insurance. Introduced under Government Notice No. 256 of 2026, the regulation applies at all airports, seaports and land borders, and is part of a broader effort by the Tanzanian government to ensure visitors have access to basic medical and travel protection during their stay.
Here’s the important part for your clients: this policy is mandatory, but it does not replace their existing travel insurance. Comprehensive personal coverage is still essential—Inbound Travel Insurance is simply an added government requirement.
Of note: a single policy covers travel to both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, so clients splitting their trip between the two won’t need to buy separate coverage. Worth double-checking, too—citizens of East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states are exempt from this requirement.
With the October 1 start date fast approaching, now’s the time to build this into your Tanzania-bound itineraries so clients arrive prepared, not surprised at the border.
