The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has made a significant decision to modernise its ageing fleet of Lockheed Martin F-16 fighter jets. The Thai government has officially approved the purchase of four Saab JAS39 E/F Gripen fighter aircraft, worth a total of 19.5 billion Thai baht (approximately USD 595 million).
Under this strategic move, three single-seat Gripen E and one twin-seat Gripen F will be integrated into the existing fleet of 12 Gripen C/D models currently in service. The first deliveries are scheduled to be completed by 2029.
Modernisation Process Officially Underway
The government’s approval follows the RTAF’s announcement in June that it had selected the Gripen E/F model. According to local sources, the Commander of the Royal Thai Air Force will make an official visit to Sweden at the end of August to finalise the agreement.
This procurement is regarded as a key component of Thailand’s goal to modernise its regional air power and enhance its deterrence capability.
Gripen E/F: Equipped with 5th-Generation Capabilities
The Gripen E/F stands out with its advanced radar systems, enhanced weapons configurations, low operational costs, and superior manoeuvrability. In particular, it offers more advanced technologies than the F-16 in areas such as electronic warfare, network-centric warfare capabilities, and modern sensor integration.
A Move That Could Shift Regional Balance
Thailand’s acquisition could play a decisive role in the air power balance in Southeast Asia. By expanding its Gripen fleet, Thailand will become one of the countries with the most advanced fighter aircraft infrastructure in the region.
