Severe turbulence aboard a Cathay Pacific passenger flight operating between Brisbane and Hong Kong caused terrifying moments in the air. A sudden loss of altitude on the Airbus A350-900 aircraft injured a total of 10 people, including six cabin crew members.
Following the incident, injured passengers and crew members were transported to hospitals in Hong Kong, while the aircraft landed safely.
Turbulence Occurred Two Hours Before Arrival in Hong Kong
The incident took place on May 23, 2026, when the Airbus A350-900 encountered severe turbulence approximately two hours before its scheduled landing time.
The sudden drop reportedly lasted around two seconds and occurred while cabin crew in economy class were preparing meal service.
According to passenger accounts, panic quickly spread throughout the cabin during the incident.

“It Felt Like Free Falling”
One passenger described the experience to the South China Morning Post by saying:
“It felt like falling from a drop tower.”
The passenger also stated that people were screaming while service equipment and personal belongings were thrown around inside the cabin.
Injured Passengers Taken to Hospital
Four passengers and six cabin crew members were injured during the incident. Authorities confirmed that eight of the injured individuals were transferred to hospitals in Hong Kong for treatment and observation.
Reports also indicated that two Australian passengers were among those injured.

Aircraft Landed Safely in Hong Kong
The aircraft proceeded to Hong Kong International Airport and landed safely before 7:00 a.m. local time.
Following the landing, medical teams boarded the aircraft directly to assist passengers and crew members.
According to Flightradar24 data, the flight completed its planned route and arrived safely in Hong Kong.

Recent severe turbulence incidents around the world have once again sparked debate within the aviation industry regarding flight safety.
Experts say turbulence events are becoming more intense due to factors such as:

Aviation experts emphasize that keeping seatbelts fastened throughout the flight can significantly reduce injuries during incidents like these.
