Under the coordination of the Presidency of Defense Industries, Turkey’s first fully domestic and national helicopter engine, the TEI-TS1400, continues its maturation tests for mass production after successfully completing its first manned flight on April 19, 2023.
Successful Testing and Endurance
Prior to its maiden flight, the national engine underwent hundreds of rigorous tests mandated by both TEI and TUSAŞ Airworthiness Committees, earning the approval for manned flight. The TS8-coded national engine, which performed flawlessly in its initial flight, successfully completed the CS-E 740 Endurance tests requirements of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). These involved 15 consecutive 6-hour endurance tests.
OEI Scenario and Maximum Power Output
Following a series of over a dozen specifically designed CS-E 740 endurance tests, the engine was subjected to the One Engine Inoperative (OEI) scenario to push its limits. In this test, the TS8-coded engine demonstrated an impressive performance by reaching a power level of 1740 horsepower (HP). According to EASA regulations, the engine continued to produce emergency-level power for 30 seconds under OEI conditions and successfully passed the test in a second attempt as well.
Implications for GÖKBEY Helicopter
This landmark test has proven that the TEI-TS1400 engine can provide all the power required under the most demanding conditions for the GÖKBEY helicopter. The rigorous testing and successful results underline the engine’s reliability and capability, reinforcing its suitability for operational deployment in critical missions.
The achievement of the TEI-TS1400 is a significant milestone in Turkey’s defense industry, showcasing the ability to develop and produce high-performance, domestically-manufactured engines for aviation applications.
