A notable step has been taken toward resuming direct flights between Syria and Germany. A technical delegation from German airline Lufthansa conducted a comprehensive inspection at Damascus International Airport — the first such visit in nearly 12 years.
According to information from the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the assessment covered a wide range of areas including air safety, ground services, and operational systems. Syria’s Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) stated that the visit is part of broader technical and administrative improvements aimed at preparing Damascus Airport to once again accommodate European flights.
Officials noted that growing demand for direct routes from Europe to Syria — particularly from the Syrian diaspora in Germany — has accelerated the process. During a meeting between the German technical delegation and Syrian officials, a preliminary timetable was discussed for restarting flights in accordance with European Union aviation standards.
From Romania to Damascus: Danair to Launch Flights on June 15
European carriers are steadily returning to Syria. Romanian-based airline Danair has announced it will begin scheduled flights to Damascus starting June 15, 2025. According to the airline, flights will depart from cities including Bucharest, Frankfurt, Berlin, and Stockholm. Danair stated the decision aligns with bilateral agreements established with Syria.
Regional Airlines Return to Syrian Airspace
Earlier this year, Qatar Airways became the first airline to resume flights to Damascus after a 13-year hiatus. This was followed by Turkish Airlines and Royal Jordanian, which also restarted routes to the Syrian capital. Syrian Airlines currently operates regular flights to several Arab countries including Kuwait, the UAE, Qatar, and Lebanon, and is aiming to further expand its network in the near future.
