SunExpress, a joint venture of Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa, has become the first European customer of Vortex Control Technologies (VCT) by implementing VCT’s Finlet technology to reduce the carbon footprint of its Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The Finlets, a series of small “winglets” installed on the aircraft’s aft fuselage, alter airflow to reduce drag, thereby increasing the aircraft’s range, climb performance, and cruise time while decreasing fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
Initially, Finlets were installed on five Boeing 737-800 aircraft in the SunExpress fleet, entering service in May. In the next phase, Finlets are expected to be installed on up to 25 Boeing 737-800 aircraft, aiming to save half a million gallons of fuel annually and reduce carbon emissions by approximately 6 million kg. SunExpress Chief Operating Officer Cemil Sayar stated, “Our commitment to operational efficiency and sustainability encompasses all aspects of our operations. This technology, which reduces fuel consumption, extends the aircraft’s range while improving performance and cruise time. Our partnership with VCT is a strong indicator of our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint through operational efficiency and sustainability initiatives.”
VCT’s CEO Gil Morgan added, “The certification of Finlets on the 737-700, 800, and 900ER aircraft is the result of over a decade of design work, including wind tunnel testing, computational fluid dynamics, and extensive flight testing conducted by the US Air Force and FAA on C-130, C-17, and 737NG aircraft. We are excited to help our first European partner, SunExpress, achieve its operational and sustainability goals.”
