Turkish Airlines Chairman of the Board, Ahmet Bolat, announced that the massive aircraft deal with Boeing has reached its final stage. Bolat stated, “I can’t say we’ve finalised the narrow-body aircraft agreement yet, but we’re getting close.”
Ahmet Bolat, Chairman of the Boards of Turkish Airlines (THYAO) and AJet, made important statements regarding the new aircraft purchase agreement under negotiation with Boeing. Bolat noted that talks regarding narrow-body aircraft are nearing completion, saying, “I can’t say we’ve completed it, but we’re getting close to that point.”
Bolat also touched upon ongoing discussions with CFM International, Boeing’s engine manufacturer, recalling his earlier remarks: “If Boeing comes with suitable economic conditions, we will sign an agreement; otherwise, we may turn to the Airbus option.”
In his latest statement, Bolat shared concrete details about wide-body aircraft:
“Fifty of our 787 orders have been finalised, and we’ve signed the agreement. Since these aircraft use a different engine type, there was no reason to delay. We also have an option for an additional 25 units.”
Regarding narrow-body aircraft, Bolat said they are focusing on Boeing 737 MAX models, adding, “Here we’re talking about a total of 150 + 75, that is, 225 aircraft. These aircraft use a single engine type, and there is only one manufacturer.”
Stating that “negotiations have gained new momentum,” Bolat noted that the agreement could be signed soon if the figures reach the desired levels.
Bolat also emphasised that rising costs in the global supply chain have affected the entire industry, adding:
“One of the most evident impacts of the COVID period has been cost increases. Both we and the engine manufacturers are working to reduce these inefficiencies. However, there is still some way to go.”
Experts point out that if Turkish Airlines finalises this deal with Boeing, it will be one of the largest aircraft purchases in Turkish aviation history.
