KAI Launches Development of Carrier-Based Jet-Powered Unmanned Combat Aircraft

South Korea has begun developing a jet-powered unmanned combat aircraft (UCAV) capable of taking off and landing on aircraft carriers. Weighing 6 tons, the platform features stealth design, Meteor missile integration, and swarm operation capabilities. If successful, KAI's project would make South Korea the third country to possess this technology after the U.S. and Türkiye.

South Korea is set to become the third country after the United States and Türkiye to develop a jet-powered UCAV capable of operating from naval platforms.

South Korea’s defense company, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), has officially launched the development of a new-generation jet-powered unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) designed for takeoff and landing on aircraft carriers. The project is part of South Korea’s strategy to integrate unmanned systems into its naval forces and is expected to strengthen the country’s position in global military aviation.

Advanced Technical Specifications

The newly developed UCAV platform is expected to feature:

  • A maximum takeoff weight of 6 tons

  • A payload capacity of 800 kg

  • Low radar visibility (stealth) characteristics

  • An operational range of approximately 555 km

In addition to strike missions, the platform will be actively used in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations. The UCAV will also be equipped with advanced swarm technology, allowing it to command smaller unmanned aerial vehicles during missions.

Air Superiority with Meteor Missiles

One of the most notable features of the platform is its ability to carry the European-made MBDA Meteor air-to-air missiles. This will grant the UCAV not only ground strike capability but also air-to-air engagement capacity.

Third Global Player in a Strategic Race

If the project is successfully completed, South Korea will become the third country—after the U.S. and Türkiye—to develop a jet-powered UCAV capable of carrier operations. This milestone is seen as a key part of KAI’s vision to elevate the national defense industry’s position in the global market.
