A small aircraft lost control just minutes after takeoff and crashed into a three-story residential building in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Three people lost their lives in the accident, while two others were rescued with injuries. The fact that no residents of the building were harmed prevented what could have been an even greater tragedy.
Small Plane Tragedy in Brazil
The plane crash in Brazil quickly became a major national news story. Shortly after taking off from Pampulha Airport and heading to São Paulo, a small aircraft crashed into a three-story residential building in Belo Horizonte. Three people on board were killed, while two others were rescued with injuries.
Authorities stated that none of the residents inside the apartment building were injured during the incident. According to initial findings, the aircraft struck the building’s stairwell rather than the residential units, preventing a far more devastating disaster.

Pilot and Copilot Died at the Scene
According to a statement from the Brazilian Fire Department, both the pilot and copilot died at the scene of the crash. Three individuals who were rescued in critical condition were immediately transferred to John XXIII Hospital.
However, officials later announced that one of the hospitalized victims succumbed to injuries despite all medical efforts. As a result, the death toll from the crash rose to three.

Identities of the Victims Released
According to local media reports, those who lost their lives in the crash were identified as pilot Wellinton de Oliveira Pereira (34), Leonardo Berganholi Martins (50), and Fernando Moreira Souto (36), the son of Jequitinhonha Mayor Nilo Souto.
The two survivors, Arthur Schaper Berganholi (25) and Hemerson Cleiton Almeida Souza (53), were reported to be in stable condition.
Aircraft Crashed Minutes After Takeoff
According to authorities, the aircraft began losing altitude shortly after departing from Pampulha Airport while operating a flight to São Paulo.
Footage broadcast by local media showed the plane descending rapidly before veering to the left, losing control, and crashing directly into the apartment building.
Numerous fire, medical, and security teams were dispatched to the scene following the accident.

Search and Safety Operations Continue at Crash Site
Firefighters launched extensive operations in the wreckage area following the crash. Officials stated that rescue efforts were ongoing alongside structural safety inspections of the building.
Authorities also announced that security measures around the debris field had been strengthened and that a technical investigation into the cause of the accident remains underway.
A Larger Tragedy May Have Been Avoided at the Last Moment
Experts and local authorities believe that the aircraft’s impact with the building’s stairwell, rather than directly into occupied apartments, significantly reduced the potential loss of life.
The fact that residents escaped without injury is being cited as one of the key factors that prevented the incident from turning into a much greater tragedy.
