Russia’s Novosibirsk Siberian Aeronautical Research Institute (SibNIA) is conducting research on vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft. The institute’s Deputy Director, Dmitry Smirnov, announced that a 26 kg demonstration model had been created and had passed successful tests.
SibNIA continues to develop VTOL technology in collaboration with various unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) manufacturers across Russia. However, there are certain technical challenges in the production of large-scale VTOL aircraft (2 tonnes and above). One of the primary issues is ensuring stability and controllability during the transition between vertical and horizontal flight.
SibNIA engineers are conducting intensive R&D efforts to overcome these technological barriers. The development process is supported within the framework of Russia’s unmanned aviation programme, with the goal of creating advanced VTOL aircraft for military, civil, and industrial applications in the future.
