Istanbul’s second largest air gateway, Sabiha Gökçen International Airport, is preparing to open its renovated T1 terminal in response to rapidly increasing passenger traffic and to further enhance service quality. The renovation project, carried out in collaboration between HEAŞ – a subsidiary of the Presidency of Defence Industries of the Republic of Türkiye – and ISG, is set to significantly boost the airport’s capacity and passenger comfort once completed.
Targeting a Capacity of 47 Million Passengers
Following the commissioning of the second runway, Sabiha Gökçen Airport now handles 22% of Türkiye’s total air traffic. With the reopening of the T1 terminal, the airport aims to increase its annual passenger capacity to 47 million. T1 alone is expected to serve approximately 4 million passengers per year.
Special Connecting Bridge Between T1 and T2
Covering an area of 24,000 square metres, the T1 terminal will be integrated with the existing T2 terminal via a 240-metre-long dedicated bridge. Passengers who have completed passport and security checks at T2 will be able to access T1 via moving walkways and use its 8 new boarding gates. This will help reduce congestion and offer a more comfortable travel experience.
Modern and Earthquake-Resistant Structure
Like the current T2 terminal, the T1 building has been reinforced with advanced seismic isolation technologies. With additional geophysical and ground improvement works, the structure has been brought in line with the highest safety standards against potential disaster scenarios.
32% Increase in Parking Capacity
The renovation project also includes an expansion of the airport’s parking facilities. The T1 car park will be increased from 607 to 1,029 vehicles, bringing the total car park capacity to 6,752 vehicles. In addition, intercity bus stops are being repositioned to reduce walking distances for passengers.
