Following the publication in the Official Gazette of the “Law on Amendments to the Turkish Civil Aviation Law and Some Laws and Decree Law No. 655” accepted by the General Assembly of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM), attention has turned to the implementation of the new regulations.
New Security Protocols
Under the law, all passengers at airports, along with their belongings, can be searched using technical devices and, if necessary, by hand. If the checks conducted with technical devices cannot be concluded, and passengers refuse the hand search of themselves and their belongings, they will not be allowed into the airport or onto the aircraft.
Personnel Training
To fully implement the new regulation, airport operators have started personnel training. Sabiha Gökçen Airport (ISG) General Manager Alp Er Tunga Ersoy stated that exemptions have been eliminated and that ensuring passenger and baggage security is essential. Ersoy emphasized that applications are being carried out in accordance with European and global standards in Turkey, and that the National Civil Aviation Security Program is being used as a reference for security.
Expansion of Security Checks
Ersoy noted that Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport is in the “mega airports” category and that they are conducting various efforts to manage this volume. He stated that by expanding security checkpoints and increasing the number of passages, they aim to provide passengers with a faster and safer travel experience. He also mentioned that additional personnel are assigned during busy periods such as holidays.
TAV Security and Implementation Facilitation
TAV Security General Manager Turgay Şahan stated that the changes are defined under two main headings:
- Facilitating the application of body searches to all passengers by private security personnel without exception.
- Increasing penalties for those who object.
Şahan emphasized that the new regulation does not impose any additional burden or risk on airport operators, and that the process of security checks will be faster and more comfortable for passengers by preventing disputes.
Implementation at Istanbul Airport
Officials from Istanbul Airport operator İGA stated that the regulation complies with the rules set within the framework of the National Civil Aviation Security Program and the Airport Security Program. They noted that the regulation would clarify the authorities of private security personnel and enhance security measures, thereby ensuring safety and compliance with international regulations at airports.
