The Boeing 777-300ER, operating the London-Singapore route, made an emergency landing in Bangkok due to turbulence. A 73-year-old British passenger suffered a suspected heart attack and died, while at least 30 people were injured during the turbulence.
Student Recounts Terrifying Moments
Dzafran Azmir, a 28-year-old student on the flight, described the horrifying moments: “I saw people across the aisle hitting the ceiling and then falling to the floor in very awkward positions. There were large gashes on people’s heads.” Photos from inside the plane showed cracks in the overhead panels, oxygen masks hanging down, and luggage scattered around.
Evacuation Flight
Singapore Airlines operated an evacuation flight that departed from Bangkok at 5 a.m. local time, carrying 131 passengers and 12 crew members back to Singapore. The original flight had 211 passengers and 18 crew members, mostly Australians, British, and Singaporeans.
Singapore Airlines CEO Apologizes
Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong issued a video message expressing his condolences: “On behalf of Singapore Airlines, I extend my deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.” The Singapore Transport Safety Investigation Bureau (TSIB) is investigating the incident. Goh mentioned that the pilot declared an emergency and landed the plane in Bangkok after encountering sudden severe turbulence. According to the flight tracking platform FlightRadar24, the plane experienced “a rapid change in vertical speed consistent with a sudden turbulence event” around 7:49 a.m. local time.
