The Nigerian Air Force has announced the delivery of the second batch of two TAI T129 ATAK attack helicopters from Turkey. This development is part of Nigeria’s efforts to enhance its military capabilities in the fight against insurgency and terrorism. The helicopters arrived in the country following the first batch of T129s delivered in November 2023.
Advanced Helicopters Land in Benue State
A Turkish Air Force A400M cargo plane transported the helicopters to the Tactical Air Command Headquarters in Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria, on September 3, 2024. The TAI T129 ATAK is a twin-engine attack helicopter designed for armed reconnaissance and assault missions in challenging environments, equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The helicopter features innovative capabilities, including a specialized electro-optical FLIR system, advanced electronic warfare, and countermeasure systems.
Enhancing Counter-Insurgency Efforts
The new helicopters are expected to significantly enhance Nigeria’s counter-insurgency operations. The T129s will complement the existing helicopter fleet, working alongside Russian Mil Mi-24/35 Hind and Agusta A-109 Powers light attack helicopters.
In 2021, the Nigerian Air Force expressed the need to acquire attack helicopters and subsequently began discussions with various international manufacturers, including the European-based Airbus, India’s HAL, and Turkey’s TAI.
Strengthening Defense Cooperation with Turkey
The delivery of these helicopters demonstrates the strengthening of defense partnership between Nigeria and Turkey. The two countries have been solidifying their bilateral relations in recent years, with Turkey emerging as a key supplier of military equipment to Nigeria. Nigeria also plans to acquire additional defense equipment, including Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drones and armored vehicles.
In 2022, Nigerian military leaders explored advanced military equipment acquisition through collaboration with Turkish defense companies, resulting in a contract for the procurement of six TAI T-129 ATAK helicopters at a unit price of $45 million.
Training and Operational Efficiency
To ensure the effective use of the T129 ATAK helicopters, personnel from the Nigerian Air Force began training in Turkey in May 2023. The training program focuses on the operation and maintenance of these helicopters and is expected to last several months.
Support for National Security and Enhanced Capabilities
The acquisition of these helicopters underscores Nigeria’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and ensuring the safety of its citizens. With the T129s, the Nigerian Air Force will be better equipped to address the country’s security challenges.
The Nigerian Air Force currently operates a total of four T129 ATAK helicopters, enabling the country to play a significant role in regional security efforts. Additionally, Nigeria plans to acquire 12 American AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters as part of an $875 million arms deal. These purchases will further bolster Nigeria’s military capabilities, as the country begins to retire some of its aging Russian-made Mil Mi-24V/P attack helicopters.
