Nigeria Strengthens Its Position as West Africa’s Aviation Hub with Direct Flights to 31 Countries
According to FlightConnections data, Nigeria operates direct flights to more than 30 countries across four continents, reinforcing its role as a strategic aviation hub in West Africa. Services are provided mainly through five international airports: Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano and Enugu. The busiest share of intercontinental traffic originates from Lagos and Abuja.
Extensive Connections to Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas
Within Africa, Nigeria has direct flight connections with more than 20 countries, stretching from Algeria to South Africa. These routes are of critical importance for regional trade, business travel and family visits.
In Asia, Nigeria maintains direct links with Lebanon, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. Flights to Saudi Arabia see particularly high demand during the Hajj and Umrah seasons.
In Europe, regular flights operate to key hubs such as France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. These routes are heavily used by business travellers and the Nigerian diaspora.
In North America, direct flights connect Lagos and Abuja to Atlanta and New York. The Lagos–Atlanta service, lasting around 12 hours, is Nigeria’s longest direct route.
Brazil: The New Destination
As of August 2025, Nigeria’s flight network will cover 56 airports in 30 countries, with local carriers such as Air Peace and Ibom Air operating alongside global airlines including Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, British Airways and Emirates.
Under a new Bilateral Air Services Agreement with Brazil, Air Peace is expected to launch Lagos–São Paulo flights. LATAM Airlines is also considering entering the same route. This new connection will revive the historic link once operated by VARIG and reduce travel time to around 10 hours.
With Brazil added, Nigeria’s direct flight network will expand to 31 countries, further consolidating the country’s position as a regional aviation hub.
