Sabiha Gökçen International Airport, which ranks as Türkiye’s second-busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic and ninth in Europe, is implementing another significant project in line with its growth and capacity expansion goals. In this context, Phase 1 of the Terminal 1 Renovation Project, the construction of which has been completed, will be opened for service on Monday, 29 December.
The opening ceremony, to be held with the participation of the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, will be attended by the President of Defence Industries Prof. Dr Haluk Görgün, HEAŞ General Manager Faruk Kacır, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) Managing Director Dato Izani, the operator of Sabiha Gökçen Airport (ISG), as well as many invited guests.
Passenger Capacity Approaching 50 Million
With the commissioning of the new terminal building, Sabiha Gökçen Airport’s annual passenger capacity is aimed to approach 50 million. Once all phases are completed, the total size of Terminal 1 will reach 265,000 square metres.
At the airport, which served more than 41 million passengers last year, once the T1 renovation and activation project is completed, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 will be integrated via a connecting bridge approximately 240 metres long.
T1 to Serve as a Satellite Terminal
Planned as a satellite terminal, T1 will be connected to the existing Terminal 2 via a special bridge system starting from international gate number 201. In this way, passengers will be able to benefit from 8 additional boarding gates located in T1.
24,000 Square Metres of Space, Comfortable Travel Experience
With a total area of 24,000 square metres, T1 will be connected to Terminal 2 via moving walkways. After completing check-in, baggage and passport procedures at the main terminal, passengers will be able to move to T1 to wait for their flight times. Thanks to this system, congestion within the terminal will be reduced, while passengers will be offered a more comfortable and seamless travel experience.
With the commissioning of Terminal 1, it is planned to add approximately 4 million passengers per year to Sabiha Gökçen Airport’s capacity. Thus, the combined capacity of T1 and T2 is aimed to exceed 47 million.
