Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) once again found itself at the center of security discussions following an incident on January 17, 2025. Flight PK150 was diverted to Lahore Airport (LHE) due to heavy fog, instead of the intended destination. However, the aircraft landed on the wrong runway, which had its lights turned off.
According to FlightRadar24, the PIA flight took off from Dammam, Saudi Arabia (DMM) at 23:30 UTC and reached Lahore after approximately a three-hour flight. The flight, operated with an 11-year-old Airbus A320 registered as AP-BON, was directed by air traffic control to land on runway 36R. However, the flight crew mistakenly landed on runway 36L, which had its lights switched off.
Pilots Suspended
After the incident, the airline management suspended both the captain and the first officer until the investigation is completed. This error occurred at a critical time for PIA, which is seeking approval from safety regulators to resume European operations.
PIA’s Troubled Past
This incident brings attention back to many scandals from PIA’s past. Other controversial events in the airline’s history include:

During protests, workers strongly criticized the government’s reform plans, while security forces used plastic bullets, water cannons, and tear gas. The privatization plan has come amidst allegations that the airline has been operating under a system of favoritism for years.
