A United Airlines aircraft operating the Denver–Los Angeles flight in the United States declared an emergency and diverted to Salt Lake City after a mysterious object struck its cockpit window at an altitude of 36,000 feet. During the incident, which occurred on Thursday, the pilot was injured, and the Boeing 737 MAX 8 landed safely.
Images shared online showed bleeding and bruising on the pilot’s arms. Flight UA1093, carrying 140 passengers and crew, descended from its cruising altitude to 26,000 feet before landing at Salt Lake City International Airport. United Airlines announced that passengers were later transferred to a spare Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft and reached Los Angeles with a six-hour delay.

Mysterious Collision: Space Debris or Meteorite?
Photos shared on social media after the incident showed burn marks and impact points on the cockpit glass. Aviation enthusiasts suggested that these marks might indicate a collision with space debris or a small meteorite. However, there is currently no conclusive data supporting these theories.
In its 2023 report, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that the likelihood of space debris causing serious injuries was “one in a trillion.” Nevertheless, experts believe the marks observed on the aircraft indicate something more than an ordinary electrical malfunction. While events such as bird strikes or hail typically occur at lower altitudes, the fact that this incident happened at cruising altitude makes it even more unusual.

Investigation Continues
Teams conducting the investigation are analysing flight data, radar records, and cockpit window samples to determine the cause of the collision. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 remains grounded until the investigation is complete. According to NASA data, more than 36,000 pieces of space debris are currently being tracked in Earth’s orbit, and the U.S. Space Surveillance Network continuously monitors their orbital movements.
