Munich International Airport, one of Germany’s busiest airports, suspended all flights after drones were spotted in its airspace. Due to the security alarm, at least 17 flights were cancelled, affecting around 3,000 passengers. Fifteen aircraft scheduled to land in Munich were diverted to other airports including Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Vienna and Frankfurt.
Federal Police spokesperson Stefan Bayer stated that the first drone was detected at 21:30, and the second about an hour later. Due to darkness, no information could be provided about the type or origin of the drones.
The recent surge in drone violations across Europe has raised serious concerns about aviation safety. Similar incidents previously occurred in Denmark and Norway, where Copenhagen and Oslo airports were temporarily closed.
The Munich incident coincided with the ongoing Oktoberfest festival, which attracts millions of tourists each year. Camp beds were set up at the airport for stranded passengers, and food and beverages were provided.
