Approximately 2,500 critical aviation electronics components worth around €17 million have gone missing from a military warehouse in the city of Brindisi, Italy. The Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office and the military prosecutor have launched an investigation.
It has been revealed that approximately 2,500 critical military aviation components worth around €17 million have disappeared from an Italian Air Force depot located in Brindisi. A comprehensive investigation is being conducted by both civilian and military prosecutors regarding the incident.
Which Aircraft Are Affected?
The missing parts include systems belonging to the following military platforms:
- Panavia Tornado fighter-bomber aircraft
- AMX International AMX attack aircraft
- Lockheed C-130 Hercules transport aircraft
In particular, the AMX International AMX was developed through a partnership between Italy and Brazil and is still actively used in the inventory of the Brazilian Air Force. Italy, however, retired this model from service last year.
Were the Parts Smuggled to South America?
An unconfirmed line of inquiry in the investigation is evaluating the possibility that the components may have been smuggled to South America — particularly to Brazil, where certain aircraft types remain active.
According to experts, the supply of original spare parts for military aircraft that are no longer in production is becoming increasingly difficult. This situation is driving up demand for certified components in international secondary military parts markets. However, these markets are monitored under NATO regulations and strict protocols between allied countries.
Legal and Technical Process Ongoing
Italian judicial authorities have ordered a technical assessment to determine whether the missing parts were actually destroyed or whether they remain fully usable.
Meanwhile, the Italian Air Force announced that it has established an internal technical investigation commission. Officials have not shared further details with the public due to the ongoing judicial process.
