In São Paulo, Brazil, a pilot belonging to LATAM Airlines Brasil was detained by police in the cockpit just minutes before takeoff. It was reported that the pilot was arrested on allegations of leading an organized network linked to child sexual abuse.
Drama on the Aircraft: Pilot Detained in the Cockpit
The incident that took place in the morning at Congonhas Airport in São Paulo, Brazil, created shockwaves in the aviation world. While preparations were ongoing for LATAM Airlines Brasil flight LA3900 (São Paulo–Rio de Janeiro), police teams boarded the aircraft and headed to the cockpit.
Footage showed police officers moving through the aisle, removing the pilot from the cockpit and handcuffing him in front of astonished passengers.

“Fasten Your Seatbelts” Operation
It was announced that 60-year-old Sérgio Antônio Lopes, a pilot at LATAM Airlines Brasil, was arrested on suspicion of leading a gang connected to child sexual abuse for at least eight years.
The investigation was reported to be conducted under an operation called “Fasten Your Seatbelts.” Authorities alleged that the suspect used forged documents to take underage girls to motels and may have been part of an organized criminal network.
A 55-year-old woman was also detained. She is alleged to have facilitated the abuse of her 10-, 12-, and 14-year-old grandchildren in exchange for money. Temporary detention orders were issued for both suspects.

Searches Conducted, Investigation Ongoing
Police carried out search and seizure operations at addresses in São Paulo and Guararema reportedly linked to Lopes.
Authorities stated that the investigation includes serious charges such as rape of a vulnerable person, facilitating prostitution, and sexual abuse of minors. It was also indicated that further detentions may occur.

Statement from LATAM
LATAM Airlines Brasil announced after the incident that an internal investigation had been launched and that they are cooperating fully with authorities. The company emphasized that it condemns all criminal activity and remains committed to the highest safety and ethical standards.
According to the airline’s statement, flight LA3900 departed and landed as scheduled despite the arrest.
