As of January, rising security risks and airspace restrictions in the Middle East have deeply shaken the global aviation sector. KLM, Air France, Lufthansa, British Airways, Wizz Air, flydubai, Emirates and many other major airlines have suspended or cancelled flights to Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Jordan and neighbouring countries.
Geopolitical tensions, military activity and warnings issued by regulatory authorities have forced airlines to take operationally mandatory decisions. As a result, thousands of passengers have had to cancel their travel plans or seek alternative routes.
Security Concerns Prompt Airlines to Act
Increasing risks in Middle Eastern airspace have affected many key airports in the region, particularly Israel’s Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport. KLM and Air France, together with the Lufthansa Group and British Airways, have suspended or significantly revised their flight schedules, joined by numerous Europe- and Middle East-based carriers.
Warnings issued by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) advise airlines to avoid Iranian, Iraqi and surrounding airspace. This has led not only to direct cancellations, but also to longer route diversions, delays and increased operational costs.

- KLM: Temporarily suspended Tel Aviv flights; avoiding Iranian airspace and suspending some Gulf services.
- Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels): Cancelled night flights to Israel until the end of January; limited daytime services continue.
- British Airways: Has not issued an official mass cancellation statement, but is implementing route changes by avoiding Iranian and Iraqi airspace.
- Wizz Air: Continues operations but does not use Iranian or Iraqi airspace.
- Emirates and flydubai: Numerous flights to Iranian cities cancelled; regional operations re-planned.
- Qatar Airways: Suspended Tehran services.
- Air India and IndiGo: Route changes and some cancellations due to avoidance of Iranian airspace.

These developments have caused serious disruption for thousands of passengers planning holiday and business travel.
