Flights at Manchester Airport and across the UK have faced major disruption today (Monday, September 21) due to air traffic control issues. The National Air Traffic Services (NATS) issue affected airspace in northern and central England, as well as in Scotland and Northern Ireland. The issue was at the NATS Prestwick centre in Scotland.
NATS confirmed that the issue was fixed shortly after 10.30am. A NATS spokesperson said:"The issue in our Prestwick centre is now fixed. We are working with airports and airlines to safely lift air traffic regulations as quickly as we can to minimise any further disruption. We apologise for the disruption." NATS has said that the issue is unrelated to problems earlier this month when around 2,000 flights were cancelled due to a NATS software defect. After the issue was fixed, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said on social media: “There has been a further IT issue affecting Nats. Engineers have fixed the problem and systems are resuming.
“I know this will be deeply frustrating for passengers after the previous issue. There may be some delays as things reset. Please check with your airline for updates.” In a statement a Manchester Airport spokesperson said: "NATS has reported that the issue affecting one of its air traffic control sites in Scotland has been fixed.
Operations are returning to normal but some flights may still be affected by delays as a result of the earlier problem. Passengers due to travel today are advised to check for updates from their airline” While the issue has been fixed, there’s expected to be a knock-on effect on flight schedules.
