As part of a new military cooperation with Ukraine in the fight against the Russian invasion, France will send ‘Mirage-2000’ fighter jets to Ukraine and train Ukrainian pilots. According to an announcement by French President Emmanuel Macron, he will propose to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whom he will meet today, that the pilot training commence this summer.
Macron stated that the pilots will be trained in France, and considering that pilot training typically lasts five to six months, they are expected to be ready by the end of the year. Previously, France had refused to send fighter jets to Ukraine and train Ukrainian soldiers. However, noting the significant challenge Ukraine currently faces in training soldiers, Macron announced that France would train and equip an entire brigade of 4,500 Ukrainian soldiers, ensuring they are prepared to defend themselves upon returning to Ukraine after their training.
Macron’s statements regarding this new aid package indicate a significant shift in France’s stance towards Ukraine. Although France had previously declined to send fighter jets and provide military training to Ukraine, the ongoing Russian invasion and Ukraine’s urgent defense needs have prompted a reassessment of this decision. France will send Mirage-2000 fighter jets to Ukraine and provide comprehensive support for training the Ukrainian pilots who will operate these jets. The training is expected to begin in the summer and be completed by the end of the year.
Macron also highlighted that France would train and equip an entire brigade of 4,500 Ukrainian soldiers, who will return to Ukraine and take an active role in the country’s defense after their training.
