Yesterday, the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs of the U.S. Department of State announced on the X platform, “The United States is proud to announce that an important forward step was taken today regarding Turkey’s purchase of the most advanced new F-16 Block 70 fighter jets ever produced, which are provided only to the closest allies and partners.” The U.S. also emphasized that this sale is an example of Washington’s unwavering commitment to the security partnership it has built with Ankara.
Delivery in 2028:
A U.S. Department of State official stated that the social media post was made due to the completion of the F-16 sales package. At a press conference later in the day, U.S. Department of State Spokesperson Matthew Miller confirmed the information obtained by Hürriyet, saying, “Turkey has signed the letter of offer and acceptance for the purchase of F-16s. We are pleased to see the agreement progressing.” The first F-16 delivery is expected to occur in 2028. The contract is expected to be signed this month or in July, followed by the delivery schedule. A critical question mark in the process is where the F-16 production and modernization activities will take place. It is indicated that a proposal for production to be conducted in Turkey has been submitted to U.S. authorities.
