Frankfurt and Munich Locked Down! Lufthansa Flights Halted
Due to a cabin crew strike at Lufthansa, hundreds of flights were cancelled across Germany. More than 90,000 passengers were affected, particularly in Frankfurt and Munich.
Strike Disrupts Air Traffic in Germany
The strike carried out by the cabin crew of Germany’s flag carrier Lufthansa negatively impacted air transportation across the country. As a result of the one-day work stoppage held on Friday, more than 90,000 passengers were affected.
Heavy Cancellations in Frankfurt and Munich
At Frankfurt Airport, one of the country’s busiest air transport hubs, 580 of the approximately 1,350 scheduled flights were cancelled.
At Munich Airport, around 400 flights were reported to be affected. The cancellations were concentrated particularly on domestic and European routes.
Strike Began at Night, Continued Throughout the Day
The strike was organized by the Independent Flight Attendants’ Organization. The action, which began shortly after midnight local time, continued until 22:00 in the evening.
Cabin crews of Lufthansa’s regional subsidiary CityLine also joined the strike at nine different German airports.
Union Criticizes Lufthansa
Union Chairman Joachim Vazquez Buerger criticized Lufthansa management for failing to present a constructive offer during the negotiation process.
Buerger argued that the disruptions were “preventable” and noted that the strike coinciding with the post-holiday travel rush increased its impact on passengers.
Warning to Passengers and Emergency Plan
Lufthansa urged passengers to check their flight status before going to the airport. The company stated that it:
- Automatically informed affected passengers
- Created alternative flight plans
- Used larger aircraft on certain routes
Chain of Strikes Continues
This strike became the latest link in a series of labor disputes at Lufthansa in 2026. Previously, in February, the cabin crew union and members of Vereinigung Cockpit had also staged a similar work stoppage.
The union had approved strike authorization by a large majority at the end of March, and it was announced that wage negotiations between the parties had reached a deadlock.
