A Lufthansa passenger aircraft operating the Athens–Munich route returned to Athens Airport minutes after takeoff due to a technical malfunction. Panic broke out during the emergency evacuation.
A passenger aircraft operated by Germany-based airline Lufthansa on the Athens–Munich route made an emergency return shortly after takeoff due to a reported technical fault. Panic reportedly spread on board during the incident, while chaotic moments during the evacuation were also reflected in passengers’ statements.
The aircraft operating flight LH1753, which departed from Athens for Munich on Monday evening, was redirected back to Athens International Airport just a few minutes after takeoff. According to information reported by local sources, the pilot contacted air traffic control and requested an emergency landing after detecting a technical problem.
Emergency Protocols Activated
The aircraft, which took off at 18:19, reportedly landed safely on the runway approximately 16 minutes later, around 18:35. Following the landing, full-scale emergency procedures were implemented at the airport, while numerous fire trucks and medical teams were dispatched around the runway.
These measures, carried out in accordance with aviation safety regulations, are considered standard procedures aimed at preventing potential risks from escalating. Technical malfunctions occurring shortly after takeoff are known to be regarded as one of the most sensitive scenarios in aviation.
Panic During Evacuation
After the aircraft was moved to its parking position, the emergency exit doors were opened and the evacuation slides were deployed. During the process in which passengers were rapidly evacuated from the aircraft, panic reportedly spread inside the cabin.
One passenger stated that major confusion occurred during the evacuation, while it was reported that people rushing toward the exits at times created uncontrolled scenes. No official statement has yet been released regarding whether there were any injuries during the incident.

The incident once again demonstrated how critical safety procedures are in civil aviation. Experts emphasize that when there is suspicion of a technical fault, the flight crew’s ability to make rapid decisions and fully implement emergency return procedures helps prevent potentially greater risks.
