LOT Polish Airlines Makes Historic Airbus Purchase, Ushering in a New Fleet Era with 40 A220 Aircraft

Poland’s flag carrier, LOT Polish Airlines, has made a bold move in its fleet transformation by placing its first-ever order with Airbus. The airline has placed a firm order for 40 A220 aircraft—20 of the A220-100 and 20 of the A220-300 models. The agreement was officially announced during the 2025 Paris Air Show.

This landmark order marks LOT’s first inclusion of Airbus aircraft in its fleet. The airline plans to gradually introduce the A220s, with a broader expansion strategy potentially increasing the total fleet to 84 aircraft.

Strategic Growth and Central Transport Hub Emphasis

LOT Polish Airlines’ CEO highlighted the strategic importance of the order:

“Today’s decision is a strong step toward building the future. The Airbus A220 aircraft will join our fleet starting in 2027, boosting our competitiveness in the European market and further strengthening our leadership in Central and Eastern Europe. These aircraft will also support our growth in line with Poland’s major infrastructure project, the Central Communication Port (CPK).”

Airbus Highlights the Partnership

Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Executive Vice President of Sales, Commercial Aircraft at Airbus, emphasized the significance of LOT joining the Airbus family:

“LOT’s A220 fleet, including both the A220-100 and A220-300 models, will be a perfect fit for its fleet renewal and network expansion goals. Airbus is committed to working closely with LOT and supporting every step of this transformation.”

A220: Setting a New Standard in Regional Aviation

The Airbus A220 is the most efficient and modern aircraft in its class, offering seating capacities from 100 to 160 passengers. The A220-100 accommodates 100–135 seats, while the A220-300 offers 120–160, catering to a range of market needs.

With a range of up to 3,600 nautical miles (approximately 6,700 km), the A220 is powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1500G engines and delivers 20% lower fuel consumption and 50% less noise footprint compared to older generation aircraft.

Like all Airbus aircraft, the A220 is already certified to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with Airbus aiming for full 100% SAF compatibility across its fleet by 2030.

A220: A Global Success Story

As of May 2025, the A220 program has received more than 900 orders from over 30 customers worldwide, with over 415 deliveries completed. The aircraft is currently in active service with 24 airlines, operating more than 1,600 routes and serving over 470 destinations.
