100 ML Liquid Restriction on Aircraft Lifted: Approved by the EU

One of the biggest problems passengers have faced for years – the 100 ml liquid restriction in hand luggage – is coming to an end with the approval of the European Union (EU). Thanks to the advanced computed tomography (CT) scanners now being deployed at airports, passengers will be able to carry up to 2 litres of liquid in their hand luggage.

The regulation, introduced in 2006 to prevent liquid explosives from being taken onto planes, forced passengers to carry liquids such as shampoo, perfume, and drinks only in 100 ml transparent bags. However, the new scanning technology can now determine within seconds whether liquids are safe through three-dimensional imaging.

• Italy: Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, Rome Fiumicino

With the new regulation, carrying everyday essentials such as baby food, medicines, and cosmetics will become easier, security checks will be faster, and travel will be more comfortable.

According to experts, it will take several years for this practice to be rolled out across Europe, as the installation of advanced scanners is continuing gradually.
