A New Era in Airbus Commercial Aircraft Division: Lars Wagner Appointed as CEO

Lars Wagner, CEO of MTU Aero Engines, will take over the leadership of Airbus Commercial Aircraft as of 2026. Christian Scherer, who has served at Airbus for more than 40 years, will step down and retire.

Airbus, one of the world’s leading aerospace companies, has announced a leadership change in its Commercial Aircraft division. Lars Wagner, currently serving as CEO of MTU Aero Engines AG, will succeed Christian Scherer as CEO of Airbus Commercial Aircraft, effective January 1, 2026.

To ensure a smooth and seamless transition, Airbus announced that Lars Wagner will join the company in early November 2025. Christian Scherer will continue in his role until December 31, 2025.

A 50-Year-Old Aviation Leader: Lars Wagner

Lars Wagner has been serving as CEO of Germany-based MTU Aero Engines AG since January 2023. Wagner joined MTU in 2015 and held strategic roles such as Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President for OEM Operations before becoming CEO. He began his aviation career at Airbus, where he held various leadership positions in Bremen, Hamburg, and Toulouse.

Holding a degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering, Wagner has also strengthened his leadership in the business world with an MBA degree.

Farewell to Christian Scherer from Airbus

Christian Scherer, who has served at Airbus for more than 40 years, has played significant roles in the company’s global success. With his leadership in the Commercial Aircraft division, Scherer has shaped the company’s strategic direction and will retire at the end of 2025, handing over the CEO role.
