With electric air taxis set to be deployed in major cities such as London, Dubai, Tokyo, and New York, urban transportation is on the verge of a transformative era.
Developed by US-based Joby Aviation and branded by companies such as Uber and Virgin, the four-seater electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft aim to transport passengers directly from “vertiport” docks along the River Thames to Heathrow Airport.
This system will provide a fast and eco-friendly alternative to road transport and trains by bypassing congested city traffic.
FAA Tests to Begin in 2025
Joby Aviation’s S4 prototype will be tested by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) test pilots in early 2025. This step is seen as a key milestone in the company’s commercial certification and rollout process.
Joby’s Chief Product Officer, Eric Allison, commented on the process:
“We’re now in the show-don’t-tell phase. Especially when it comes to the future, prediction is difficult.”
Allison emphasised that innovation is inherently unpredictable and noted that regulatory processes are being closely monitored. Following FAA approval, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Dubai will begin their own licensing procedures.
