Return Minutes After Takeoff
The US-based airline JetBlue’s aircraft, flight number 543, departed Newark Liberty International Airport for West Palm Beach at 17:45 on Wednesday and shortly after takeoff decided to return due to an engine failure.
According to a statement from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the aircraft landed safely in Newark.
FAA: Aircraft Landed Safely
In a statement made by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), it was noted that the aircraft landed safely and that the crew reported smoke in the cockpit after leaving the runway.
Passengers were then evacuated using emergency slides. Authorities reported that no injuries occurred in the incident.
Flights Temporarily Suspended at Newark
During the process of removing the aircraft from the runway, flight operations at Newark Airport were temporarily suspended.
According to the FAA and the Port Authority, the airport reopened at around 19:00 in the evening and operations returned to normal.
Airport management called on passengers to contact airline companies for updated flight information.
