• Italian Giant Moves Towards Collaboration with Turkish UAV Manufacturer Baykar

The Italian defence and aerospace company Leonardo has reached a significant stage in its partnership discussions with Turkish unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) manufacturer Baykar. According to Italy’s state news agency ANSA, Leonardo’s Chairman Stefano Pontecorvo stated that the “talking period” had ended and the cooperation process would now progress rapidly.

Swift Steps in the Cooperation Process

Pontecorvo highlighted that Leonardo’s CEO, Roberto Cingolani, had accelerated the process, emphasising that there was no room for delays in the defence industry. Last week, Pontecorvo visited Baykar’s production facility in Istanbul alongside Italy’s Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, drawing attention to Baykar’s leading position in the sector.

“Baykar is an excellent company run by highly competent and successful individuals. Their rise to become an industry leader in just 12 years is no coincidence,” he said.

Partnership to Boost Europe’s UAV Capabilities

The British newspaper Financial Times reported that the two companies were close to reaching an agreement on UAV production and might sign a memorandum of understanding next week. The agreement is expected to significantly enhance Europe’s UAV manufacturing capacity.

The combination of Leonardo’s advanced technologies with Baykar’s platforms could pave the way for the development of high-tech UAVs for sixth-generation platforms. This collaboration is also crucial for Leonardo’s involvement in the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP).

Strong Cooperation in Defence and Technology

Turkey and Italy have been taking steps to strengthen their partnerships in advanced technology sectors such as defence, aerospace, and space. After discussions with Turkey’s Minister of Industry and Technology, Mehmet Fatih Kacır, Urso noted that Baykar’s acquisition of Piaggio Aerospace would contribute significantly to Europe’s defence industry.

Leonardo’s Strong 2024 Performance

Leonardo delivered stronger-than-expected performance in the 2024 fiscal year. The company reported growth in orders, revenues, and cash flow, with defence and security activities playing a significant role in its expansion. Orders in the electronics and helicopter sectors increased by 12.2%, reaching €20.9 billion.

Cingolani stated that the company had strengthened its leadership in the global aerospace, defence, and security sectors and would continue to grow through strategic alliances.
