The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, announced that Istanbul Airport has seen the highest increase in passenger numbers in April 2024 compared to April 2019, before the pandemic.
The Airports Council International Europe (ACI EUROPE) analyzed the passenger traffic growth at European airports in April 2023 and April 2024, comparing it to April 2019, and revealed the busiest airports on the continent.
Istanbul Airport at the Top
Istanbul Airport achieved a 22.4% increase in passenger numbers in April 2024 compared to April 2019, making it the airport with the highest growth rate in the ‘Major Airports’ category.
Other Airports Also on the Rise
Sabiha Gökçen Airport, another major airport in Istanbul, also showed a significant increase. It ranked second in the ‘Mega Airports’ category with a 13.2% rise in April 2024 compared to April 2019. Antalya Airport ranked fifth in the same category with an 8.6% increase.
Smaller airports also showed growth. Erzurum Airport, in the ‘Medium Airports’ category, increased its passenger numbers by 43.2% in April 2024 compared to April 2023. Siirt Airport ranked first in the ‘Small Airports’ category with a 220% increase in passenger numbers in April 2024 compared to April 2019.
Nationwide Passenger Growth in Turkey
The evaluations for April 2023 showed that the number of passengers traveling through airports in Turkey increased by 19% in April 2024.
Istanbul Airport is Europe’s Second Busiest
Minister Uraloğlu stated that Istanbul Airport is the second busiest airport in Europe, noting, “When comparing the data from April 2023 and April 2024, Istanbul Airport welcomed 6,593,092 passengers, marking a 10.5% increase and ranking as Europe’s second busiest airport after London Heathrow. Following Istanbul Airport are the airports in Paris, Amsterdam, and Madrid.”
Leading in Cargo Transportation
Istanbul Airport also showed significant growth in cargo transportation, with a 42.7% increase in April 2024 compared to April 2023, leading in this category as well.
Minister Uraloğlu commented, “These figures demonstrate the success of our investments, showcasing the significant contribution of Istanbul Airport to our country once again.”
