Investigators probe Vietnam Airlines 787 runway overrun and tail strike in Munich

On 15 August, a Vietnam Airlines 787-9 departing Munich for Hanoi suffered a runway overrun and tail strike on departure. The aircraft, registration VN-A867, was able to gain altitude and vectored to jettison fuel weight before making a safe landing back at Munich Airport. The aircraft suffered significant damage to its rear fuselage and main landing gear.

The German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) has opened an inquiry to determine the cause of the accident.

Tail strike and runway overrun

Flightradar24 data for VN34 show the flight departed Munich at 11:57 UTC (13:57 local time).

During the takeoff from runway 26L, the 787 continued beyond the end of the paved runway before becoming airborne. The BFU said the aircraft rotated late and that its tail contacted the ground during the rotation.

The BFU also identified tire tracks at the end of the runway that could be attributed to VN-A867. Runway lights beyond the paved surface were damaged and several of the aircraft’s tires were also damaged during the overrun.

After departing Munich, VN34 climbed to 9,000 feet, where it was vectored south of the airfield. The flight jettisoned (or dumped) fuel to reduce fuel weight and prepare for an emergency landing. The aircraft made a pair of low passes at the airport so that air traffic controllers could inspect the landing gear to ensure the aircraft was able to make a safe landing.

The flight spent about two hours in the air, touching down again in Munich at 13:57 UTC (15:57 local time) on Runway 26R.

The German BFU said the aircraft’s tail touched the ground and tire marks were found that can be attributed to the flight. Additionally, the aircraft sustained damage to its main landing gear wheels and tires.

The BFU says that both digital flight data recorders have been recovered from the aircraft and will be read out at the agency’s Braunschweig facility.

As part of ICAO Annex 13’s provisions, Germany is leading the accident investigation with Vietnam a party to the investigation as the State of Operator and the US NTSB a party as the state of manufacturer for the aircraft and engines.

The BFU will publish a preliminary report in approximately one month, while the final report will take around one year to produce.
