Innovative Contribution from BTU to the TUSAŞ Lift Up Program

Students from Bursa Technical University (BTU) are making their mark with an innovative project aimed at improving the performance of composite materials used in aircraft developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc. (TUSAŞ). The project, accepted within the scope of the TUSAŞ Lift Up Industry-Oriented Undergraduate Thesis Program, aims to enhance quality control processes and analyze defects that cannot be detected using current methods.

Local Solutions for Composite Performance

The project, titled “Investigation of Mechanical and Chemical Property Changes Caused by the Hand-Cutting Method on Composite Material Components,” is conducted by BTU Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences students Cansu Temiz and Yunus Emre Ataş. The initiative seeks to contribute to TUSAŞ’s national aviation projects. Dr. Yasin Altın from BTU serves as the academic advisor, while Alper Yeşilyurt and Kübra Bolat Yaşar from TUSAŞ support the project as industrial advisors.

The Polymer Team, selected from numerous applications across Turkey, is working to enhance the composite performance of TUSAŞ aircraft produced with domestic and national resources. The project aims to develop quality control procedures for production processes and prevent potential defects.

New Approaches to Quality Control

The project team focuses on examining the mechanical and chemical effects that may arise in composite components manufactured using the hand-cutting method. The students shared insights into their work:

“In the aviation sector, the hand-cutting method, widely used to reduce costs, presents disadvantages that cannot be detected by standard quality procedures but may negatively impact part performance. With this study, we aim to analyze these effects in detail, develop solutions by conducting literature reviews, and integrate the findings into production processes.”

Congratulatory Message from the BTU Rector

BTU Rector Prof. Dr. Naci Çağlar congratulated the students involved in the project and noted that two teams from BTU were selected for the TUSAŞ Lift Up program this year. Rector Çağlar stated, “These projects demonstrate our university’s R&D strength and commitment to industry collaboration. We continue to nurture generations that contribute to the National Technology Initiative. I sincerely congratulate the students and advisors contributing to this project.”
