IndiGo, aiming to expand its fleet, has initiated talks with ATR, Embraer, and Airbus to order up to 100 regional aircraft. According to the Economic Times newspaper in India, ATR is reportedly the frontrunner in these discussions.
Expansion Plans
IndiGo, following its recent order of 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft, intends to further expand its network by placing orders for regional aircraft. The airline aims to maintain its existing aircraft type to benefit from economies of scale. In this context, potential candidates include ATR 72-600s, A220s, and Embraer E175 models.
Current Fleet and New Orders
IndiGo currently operates 45 ATR 72-600 aircraft and expects to receive five more planes this year. ATR anticipates that India will become its largest market in the next five to ten years due to the increasing demand for travel in the country.
Regional Connectivity Program
India’s government-led UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) regional connectivity program significantly contributes to the growth of domestic flights. Jean-Pierre Clercin, ATR’s Commercial Head for Asia-Pacific, stated that people are seeking greater convenience and faster transportation options, with other modes of transportation struggling to keep up with this increased demand.
IndiGo’s Fleet
In addition to Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, IndiGo’s current fleet includes two Boeing 777s leased from Turkish Airlines. This diverse fleet enhances the airline’s flexibility in both domestic and international flights.
New Job Opportunities
As part of these expansion plans, IndiGo’s potential order of up to 100 new regional aircraft will create significant job opportunities in India. The airline aims to provide passengers with more travel options by adding more flights to its regional network.
