The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that airlines aim to transport a total of 71.6 million tonnes of air cargo in 2026. The announcement once again highlighted the critical role of air cargo in ensuring the continuity of global trade and strengthening economic connectivity.
The data shared within the scope of IATA’s 2026 air transport outlook reflect the sector’s determination to maintain global connectivity while advancing its sustainability goals. It was emphasised that, alongside passenger transport, air cargo continues to be a strategic element in airlines’ overall performance.
Stating that the aviation sector is taking significant steps in line with its environmental responsibilities, the association explained that airline companies are working to generate USD 1.7 billion in climate financing through CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation). This global programme aims to offset aviation-related emissions.
Meanwhile, the report also noted that airlines plan to invest USD 4.5 billion in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in order to reduce the environmental impact of flight operations. These investments are expected to make a significant contribution to reducing the carbon footprint, particularly in air cargo operations.
According to IATA’s assessment, in 2026 the air cargo sector will continue its growth by striking a delicate balance between meeting rising demand, maintaining operational resilience, and complying with climate commitments.
