Following a hard landing by an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft in India, the runway at Pune Airport was temporarily closed. It was reported that the crew is safe and that operations are expected to return to normal shortly.
IAF aircraft made a hard landing, operations halted
An incident involving a military aircraft belonging to the Indian Air Force on Friday night in India led to the temporary suspension of runway operations at Pune Airport. It was reported that the runway became unusable after the incident and that civilian flights were suspended.
Officials stated that the aircraft made a “hard landing,” while noting that details regarding the technical aspects of the incident have not yet been clarified.
Crew safe, no damage in civilian area
In a statement made by the Indian Air Force, it was emphasized that the flight crew is safe and that no civilian infrastructure was damaged. The statement also noted that efforts are ongoing to make the runway operational again.
In its announcement on social media, the Air Force included the following statements:
“The Pune runway is temporarily unserviceable due to an incident involving an IAF aircraft. The crew is safe and there is no damage to civilian property.”
Dual-use model draws attention
Pune Airport operates under a “dual-use model,” where civilian and military operations are carried out on the same infrastructure. This structure can occasionally lead to operational sensitivities between military and commercial traffic.

Officials: Return to normal targeted within 5 hours
India’s Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, confirmed that runway operations were temporarily suspended. Mohol stated that they are coordinating with airport management and the Air Force, adding that normal flight operations are targeted to resume within approximately 5 hours.
The fragile balance of the dual-use model
This incident at Pune Airport once again brought to the agenda the operational fragility of the dual-use model, where military and civilian aviation share the same runway. While such infrastructures provide efficiency, they can also create a critical dependency where a single technical issue can halt all air traffic.
