On October 8, 2024, French Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu confirmed the development of a new combat drone that will accompany the Rafale F5 fighter jets set to enter service after 2030. Announced during a ceremony at Saint-Dizier Air Base, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the French Strategic Air Forces, this drone is being developed under the leadership of Dassault Aviation, with the first orders already placed with manufacturers.
Stealth Technology and Autonomous Systems
Expected to be operational by 2033, the stealth combat drone is designed to integrate with the Rafale F5 jets. It will feature autonomous control systems and stealth technology, with key capabilities including an internal weapons bay and advanced reconnaissance functions. The drone will be used to penetrate enemy defense lines, gathering intelligence and performing forward operations.
Linked to the nEUROn Program
The development of this new drone is heavily influenced by the successes of Dassault’s nEUROn program, a European collaboration that began in 2003 and produced a technology demonstrator that first flew in 2012. Dassault Aviation CEO Éric Trappier stated that this new drone, in conjunction with the Rafale F5, will provide the French Air Force with a significant technological edge starting in 2033.
Rafale F5 and Future Plans
The Rafale F5, scheduled for service in 2030, is being designed to enhance the French Air Force’s capabilities for both conventional and nuclear deterrence missions. Replacing the F4 standard, the F5 will feature improved connectivity and data processing abilities. It will also incorporate new weapon systems, including the ASN4G hypersonic nuclear-capable ramjet missile, further advancing France’s defense capabilities.
