South African airline FlySafair has begun taking operational precautions amid the possibility of a pilot strike. The airline has warned passengers that some flights may be disrupted between 22 and 28 July.
Following a deadlock in wage negotiations with the Solidarity union, a majority of FlySafair’s pilots are preparing to go on strike. Around two-thirds of the airline’s pilots are union members. The company’s latest proposal of a 5.7% pay increase was deemed insufficient and rejected by many pilots.
In a statement from the union, it was emphasised that pilots have been ignored for a long time, are exhausted, and are struggling to cope with increasing workloads. It also noted deteriorating working conditions, eroding trust, and that many pilots are reconsidering their careers at FlySafair.
The parties met on Thursday, 18 July, to clarify the rules surrounding the strike process. The talks are being overseen by South Africa’s Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).
FlySafair management stated that passengers will be contacted directly in case of disruptions, and bookings can be changed via the website without additional fees. The airline expressed hope for passengers’ understanding and reiterated its commitment to delivering a safe and uninterrupted service.
