Syria’s national airline has resumed regular flights to Saudi Arabia after a 12-year break, with the first flight landing in Riyadh.
This move by Syrian Airlines continues the gradual rapprochement between the two governments, which reestablished diplomatic relations last year.
Statement from the Ambassador to Riyadh
Syria’s Ambassador to Riyadh, Ayman Soussan, announced that the plane carrying 170 passengers landed in the Saudi capital and that regular flights have resumed. Soussan stated that an agreement was reached to conduct a weekly round-trip flight between Riyadh and Damascus.
Suleiman Khalil, an official from the Syrian Ministry of Transport, indicated that, depending on demand, direct flights could be expanded to include airports in the Saudi cities of Jeddah and Dammam.
Flights Resumed After 12-Year Hiatus
Passenger flights between the two countries were halted in 2012 due to the crackdown by President Bashar al-Assad on anti-government protesters. In May, flights were temporarily resumed for pilgrims participating in the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina.
